Linda and I had the pleasure of a quick, mid-week trip to Birmingham to see Bonnie Raitt in concert last Wednesday. We had early dinner reservations at Automatic Seafood and Oysters before heading to the Birmingham Civic Center Theater for the show.

We have heard great things about Automatic Seafood for a while now. The Owner and James Beard award-winning Chef, Adam Evans is a good friend of my nephew,  also a former chef, and now a wine purveyor with his new wine-distributing business Absinthe Minded Enterprises in Summerdale, Alabama. We were excited about dinner and the show!

Since we’ve been writing about dining experiences, we thought it only fitting to mention Birmingham’s food scene and our experience at Automatic. In a word, it was fantastic!

I won’t get into the details of our meal since the seafood offerings change daily. But the flavors… incredible. Every single bite of marinated crab claws, octopus, grouper cheeks, whole Lionfish, roasted vegetables, and poached swordfish had us oohing and aahing.

It’s more than the food though, as the service was impeccable. The atmosphere was casual but elegant and the music from the 80s made you say, “I haven't heard that one in a while.” It all worked to create one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in recent memory. Check out what Garden & Gun has to say about Birmingham. We can thank Frank Stitt and Highlands Bar & Grill for getting the ball rolling. Birmingham is worth the trip, I promise!
