It's 12:45 pm on a Monday and my business associate and I are hungry. We have no idea what’s open in the Fish River area of Scenic 98 Coastal on this day and time. Often, on my way to the beach, I had passed a little cafe on Highway 98 called Boggy’s but had never stopped to explore. We found them open on a Monday! We were in luck!

Upon entering the small house turned restaurant, we were greeted by a lovely hostess who explained everything to us about the buffet, the salad bar, and the dessert case. She welcomed us and said we had just missed the big lunch crowd, so we were quickly seated. We loved how quaint and inviting the space was but once we got to the food, we were sold!

Boggy’s is a true hidden gem across from the park that used to house the biggest tree in Baldwin County, “Inspiration Oak“ As usual my eyes were bigger than my stomach, but I just had to try everything on the buffet. Get ready …there was Meatloaf, Lasagna, Chicken and Dressing, Poppy Seed Chicken, and Barbeque Pork for the main course.

All were delicious, especially the Meatloaf and Pork. Butterbeans, turnip greens, black-eyed peas, corn, green beans, and cornbread were the vegetable choices and they all tasted home cooked and fresh.   I try not to eat sugar, but I couldn't resist warm bread pudding for dessert, and I had two helpings because it was so good. For $15 a person, we are full and so happy, and we must meet the Chef!

Donna Watson is the owner and chef of Boggy’s, named for the Week’s Bay Pitcher Plant Bog, just down  Fish River Road on the east side of Fish River. Donna tells us that she used to own Down by the Bay Cafe, which was at the Rose Garden at Fairhope Pier. I remember eating the most perfectly fried oysters there many years ago. The Cafe opened in 1996 and she and her husband worked together for many years at this location. Her husband had health problems and couldn't work anymore so they closed the Cafe and she opened  Boggy’s in 2019.

Donna tells us that they change the menu every day and are open 7 days a week for Lunch only. Boggy’s is especially busy on Sundays after church and has a healthy clientele of hungry working men and women during the week. She is very happy with the way things are going. “Nothing but the Best'' is the tagline on her Facebook page and if you follow the restaurant on social media, you will find out what is being served each day. It really is the best country cooking I have had in a long time!
