If you think you’ve had the best seafood ever, think again: if you haven’t tried dining at Felix’s, you haven’t had the full-fledged experience of dining like a royal.
Located at 1530 Battleship Parkway in Spanish Fort (what locals refer to as “the Causeway), Felix’s is soon to celebrate its 25th year of having a successful dining establishment in LA (“Lower Alabama”). As any long-time resident knows, if a restaurant isn’t very good, it doesn’t last long around LA.
Decorated like a true, rustic fish camp, Felix’s is probably most famous for their crab soup, which is somewhat like a bisque (and I recommend you only order a cup if you are ordering an entrée). The day we went, their special (catch of the day) was triggerfish. We had it grilled and blackened, with a Crabmeat Oscar sauce atop both servings.
They have many lunch specials, which are always a delight to the eye and palate. Dishes include Seared Ahi Tuna, Crabmeat Spinach Dip, a choice of several salads (including West Indies), and Shotgun Shrimp, a spicy fried shrimp with Thai Chili sauce.
Felix’s offers a variety of oysters, including fresh shucked on the half shell and baked oysters Rockefeller, as well as two other types of baked oysters.
Their burgers and sandwiches include their soon-to-be world-famous Causeway Chuckburger, a Philly Cheese Chicken Sandwich, or my husband’s favorite, a soft-shell crab BLT Panini. Their Po-Boy offerings include fried shrimp, crawfish tails, battered oysters, white fish, and catch of the day, cooked to your liking.
Their sides include fries, coleslaw, a delightful Green Beans Almondine, Fried Green Tomatoes, grits and baked potatoes, the latter of which you can order loaded. They also offer a brown rice dish and corn and jalapeno fritters—but the star of the side show has to be their 3-cheese mac ‘n cheese, which they serve in a hot ramekin with melted Monterey Jack, Cheddar and Parmesan cheeses.
Their menu offerings also include several types and cuts of steak (such as ribeye and filet mignon), which you can order topped with Crabmeat Oscar.
If you have room for it, they offer some delightful desserts, such as cheesecake and a wonderful key lime pie, the latter of which they serve with cherry sauce and a fresh lime slice for you to squeeze over before you dig in.
Besides the food choices never being a disappointment to this happy patron, the piece de resistance is their service: when your orders are ready, the waitstaff brings all the dishes to the table and, on cue, sets them all down at once. This dramatic ceremonial way of serving is impressive and satisfying, as no one is left waiting on their meal.
For those who like to relax with a cocktail, the Boathouse Bar provides a full array of libations sure to please. Oftentimes, the bar has live music as well.
Besides the service, the food and the diversity of dining options, all diners can enjoy a breathtaking view of Mobile Bay. Oftentimes, part of the entertainment is watching oyster boats and their workers plying their trade in the water, tonging for the bivalves as a variety of sea birds and shorebirds fly by or hunt for their dinner as they wing it over the water.
The hours for Felix’s are Monday through Saturday, 11-9. For more, go to their Facebook page or to their website at www.Felixsfishcamp.com.
