One of Linda's and my favorite places to eat in Fairhope is Master Joe’s. Named for the owner and original chef, Joe Ou, the small restaurant on Section Street is always inviting and friendly. Joe has combined his Japanese training with a few American ingredients to create a wonderful array of palate-pleasing dishes.

Joe is a sushi master himself, but most of the preparation is done by sushi chefs that work under his tutelage. The presentations themselves are worth a visit. Every dish I’ve tried makes me utter deep satisfying moans of pleasure. On this day, Linda and I sat at the bar and ordered from the lunch roll specials menu that included two or three sushi rolls with a choice of miso soup or ginger salad.

We both had delicious miso soup. Linda had a Boston Roll and a Mexican Roll, and she loved them. I had the Spicy Tuna Roll and the Tempura Shrimp Roll. We don’t usually, but we passed on our usual appetizer, the Pork Gyoza dumplings with peanut sauce. (Not my choice to pass) They are so good......next time!

For those that are not into sushi or sashimi, Master Joe’s offers great lunch and dinner entrees such as chicken, beef, and seafood dishes that come with soup or salad and white or fried rice. You can’t go wrong. However, the Chef’s Specialty Rolls and dishes are a can’t-miss! Master Joe’s has a full bar with domestic and Japanese beers, wines, and warm or cold sake to round out your experience.

A fun fact, before moving to America, Joe went by Xian C. Ou and was a doctor working in Southeast  China. While he enjoyed practicing medicine and helping people, he couldn’t resist the opportunity to move to Japan and study under a true sushi master. He studied for ten long years before earning his title and moving to New York with his wife, Karen.

Once the family began growing, they discovered Fairhope, moved there, and opened Master Joe’s in 2009. That certainly pleased the sushi lovers in the area, and they have been happy ever since!
