On a sultry, First Friday Art Walk evening in August, we met some friends at The Book Cellar to listen to some great music and to see who was out and about. As the event space for Page & Palette, The Book Cellar is becoming the go-to place for music, drink, and author events. There’s an author event this evening that I wish I could attend featuring Rinker Buck as he will tell tales of his “Huck Finn” style adventures in Life on the Mississippi. It starts at 6:00, but arrive early to get a good seat, meet friends and chat over a cool libation.

Back to the music, The Leavin’ Brothers were scheduled to start around 6:30 and by 6:15, the place was packed, and people were ready to party. The Leavin’ Brothers consist of brothers Evans and Charles Davis on acoustic guitars, and Dr. David Trice on bass guitar (their other brother from a different mother). They call their style of music Southern Gulf Grass Music.

Simply put, they are really good, and they are fun! In addition to being very good musicians in their own right, they have also written many of their songs that are local favorites. Evans and Charles spent some time in Nashville in the mid-90s to pursue songwriting careers. It wasn’t long before the Leavin’ Brothers Band, as they became known, were opening for some big acts and had a recording contract with Javelina Studios and HoriPro Entertainment.

After five years of touring the South, the brothers decided to slow it down a bit and moved to Point Clear and a quieter existence on Mobile Bay. (They must be trendsetters!) Their songs incorporate life in the South that rings familiar, and they bring it to you with terrific harmonies and great between-song banter. They are lively and engaging and are a good time waiting to happen.

Friday night was a live recording session, and except for a couple of slip-ups, Mama won’t fuss too much about cuss words when she listens to the album. They are using this opportunity to help promote Clean Water Alabama, a program that is working to find solutions to keep our waterways clean so we can keep swimming! You’ll find the Leavin’ Brothers playing all along the Scenic98Coastal area. Go to their Facebook page to find their next gig.
